HISTORY AND LEGEND RATU BOKO ROYAL PALACE
Ratu Boko is located about 3 km south of Prambanan. Ratu Boko Tourism Area is located on a hill with a height of ± 195.97 m above sea level. Ratu Boko Tourism Area is actually not a temple, but the ruins of a royal palace. Therefore, Ratu Boko Temple is often referred to as the Ratu Boko Palace. The palace is called Boko, because according to legend this place is the palace of Ratu Boko, his father Rara Jonggrang. It is estimated that the Boko site was built in the 8th century by the Shailendra Buddhist dynasty, but was later taken over by the Hindu Mataram kings. This ownership transition caused the construction of the Ratu Boko Palace to be influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism.
The legend begins when Bandung Bondowoso attacks the kingdom of Boko and kills his king. While winning the war he found a beautiful princess named Roro jongrang, daughter of the royal king Boko. He is interested in marrying as a wife. Rara Jongrang who was still hurt because his father was killed by Bandung Bondowoso, but was helpless to reject his proposal. Finally, Rara wanted to be married as long as a thousand temples were made in one night and Bandung Bondowoso agreed. With his supernatural power, Bandung Bondowoso summoned his supernatural creatures and ordered a thousand temples to be built. How long after that 999 temples have been made. Rara Jongrang worried after knowing that only one more temple was made and that time was still sufficient. Rara Jongrang found an idea and ordered its citizens to pound rice and burn rice straw. The chickens around thought the sun had risen after seeing the light emanating from the burning of straw, the sound of rice pounding, so the chickens crowed. And the supernatural creatures of Bandung Bondowoso returned to their homes after learning that a chicken's cock was mistaken for morning. Bandung Bondowoso was angry after failing to meet the requirements requested by Rara Jongrang. And even more furious after knowing Rara jongrang's cheating and cursing Rara jongrang to be a Durga statue to fulfill 1000 of her candles. And finally it became Prambanan temple
